We decided to write a small section on riding in the city of Hanoi, compared to any other major city in the South East Asia region as we would like to share the beautiful ride around the West Lake.
Take your time to enjoy this cycle as there is plenty of small cafes and eateries around. Also offering the chance of some fresh Bia Hoi and Lac (peanuts) next to an old theme park. There is a great bike shop en route that gives you the chance to buy parts, aswell as a repair service. (This would also serve as a great place to buy a bike if you are starting your trip here.)
It is 15km of peaceful riding (of course some motorbike horns) click on the map for it to open up.
Apart from this ride in Hanoi, we suggest the rest by foot to really absorb the atmosphere and not to miss any of the tiny alleyways that reveal the local life. Plus there is way too much traffic !
Regarding getting to Hanoi from Dien Bien Phu.
We took an over nighter bus to Hanoi. There were plenty of available times throughout the day but we chose the 19.30 bus, so we would save paying accommodation for that night and also have had enough time to see the musuem in Dien Bien.
The bus cost 290,000 (no bike fee) and took about 11 hours!
